A blog about gardening in Las Vegas
What is the botanical name of the palm trees at the Fairmont princes hotel Acapulco Mexico.
Hi Jerry, I’m afraid I don’t know what kind of palms they are based on the pictures I pulled up online. I can tell that they’re feather fronds however, so if you’re looking for something similar that would work well in Vegas I’d suggest the Phoenix dactylifera, commonly referred to Phoenix date palms. They’re the source of edible dates and you’ll see them planted throughout our valley. I’d avoid pygmy date palms (Phoenix robellenii) and queen palms (Syagrus romanzoffiana). They may tolerate life in the low desert but neither species generally thrives here. If you’d like to check out a variety of planted in the ground I’d head to the UNLV Co-operative Extension at the corner of Windmill and Paradise. I hope this helps!
